The efficient operation of these facilities is crucial to ensure that businesses can deliver services reliably, securely, and cost-effectively. To delve deeper into the complexities of data center management, we sat down with David Hutchison, Founder of Excipio Consulting, a company that has consistently set new benchmarks for innovation and efficiency in this critical industry.

Jack Vonich: David, thank you for joining us today. Excipio Consulting has been at the forefront of data center innovation for years. Can you start by telling us a bit about how Excipio came to be and what sets your company apart in the industry?

David Hutchison: Thank you for having me. Excipio Consulting was founded with the mission to help organizations navigate the complexities of data center management. We saw a growing need for specialized expertise in this area as businesses increasingly rely on digital infrastructure to support their operations. What sets Excipio apart is our holistic approach to data center management. We don’t just look at one aspect of a data center—we assess the entire ecosystem, from energy efficiency and sustainability to connectivity and operational workflows. Our goal is to provide solutions that are not only technically advanced but also financially sustainable for our clients.

Jack Vonich: It's interesting that you mention a holistic approach. Can you elaborate on what that looks like in practice? How does Excipio ensure that all aspects of a data center are optimized?

David Hutchison: Absolutely. A data center is a complex environment with many moving parts. To ensure that it operates efficiently, we take a comprehensive view that includes both the physical infrastructure and the operational processes. For example, we assess energy usage, cooling systems, and connectivity to ensure that each element is functioning optimally. But we also look at the human element—how the staff interacts with the systems, how workflows are managed, and where there may be inefficiencies or bottlenecks. By addressing both the technical and operational aspects, we can create a more efficient, resilient, and cost-effective data center.

Jack Vonich: That sounds like a very thorough process. Could you give us an example of how this holistic approach has benefited one of your clients?

David Hutchison: Certainly. One example that comes to mind is a client who was looking to build a new data center. Initially, they were planning to make a significant investment—tens of millions of dollars—without fully exploring all their options. We stepped in and helped them rethink their approach. Instead of a large, upfront investment, we recommended a modular, scalable solution. This allowed them to start small and scale up as their needs grew, keeping their overhead and capital expenditures low. The result was not only a more financially sustainable project but also one that could adapt to their changing needs over time.

Jack Vonich: It's impressive that you were able to help them reduce their initial investment. In addition to financial sustainability, Excipio is known for its commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability. Can you talk about some of the strategies you use to achieve these goals?

David Hutchison: Energy efficiency and sustainability are at the core of what we do. Data centers are notoriously energy-intensive, so it's crucial to find ways to minimize their environmental impact. One of the strategies we use is advanced cooling techniques. Traditional air-based cooling systems are effective but can be inefficient in terms of energy use.

By implementing water-based cooling systems, which have a much higher heat-carrying capacity, we can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%. Additionally, we integrate renewable energy sources whenever possible, such as solar or wind power, to further reduce the carbon footprint of our data centers.

Jack Vonich: Reducing energy consumption by 30% is a significant achievement. How do you ensure that these energy-saving measures don’t compromise the performance or reliability of the data center?

David Hutchison: That’s a great question. The key is to find a balance between efficiency and performance. While energy savings are important, they can’t come at the expense of reliability or performance. That’s why we use a combination of advanced monitoring tools and predictive analytics to ensure that the systems are always running optimally. These tools allow us to identify potential issues before they become problems, so we can take proactive measures to maintain high levels of performance and reliability. Additionally, we conduct regular audits and assessments to ensure that our energy-saving measures are working as intended and adjust as needed.

Jack Vonich: It sounds like you’ve developed a very sophisticated approach to data center management. How do you stay ahead of the curve in such a rapidly evolving industry?

David Hutchison: The key to staying ahead is continuous innovation and a commitment to learning. The data center industry is constantly evolving, with new technologies and best practices emerging all the time. To stay on top of these changes, we invest heavily in research and development. We also collaborate with industry leaders and participate in industry conferences and events, like the PTC, to share knowledge and learn from others. This helps us stay at the forefront of the industry and ensures that we’re always offering our clients the most advanced solutions available.

Jack Vonich: You mentioned earlier that Excipio takes a holistic approach to data center management, which includes considering the human element. Can you talk about how you work with clients to ensure that their staff is fully integrated into the data center’s operations?

David Hutchison: Absolutely. The human element is a critical component of data center management. Even the most advanced systems won’t function optimally if the staff isn’t fully integrated into the operations. That’s why we place a strong emphasis on training and collaboration. When we work with a client, we take the time to understand their existing workflows and processes. We then develop customized training programs to ensure that their staff is fully equipped to manage the new systems effectively. We also work closely with the client’s team to identify any potential bottlenecks or inefficiencies and provide solutions to streamline operations. This collaborative approach not only improves efficiency but also empowers the client’s staff to take ownership of the data center’s operations.

Jack Vonich: It’s clear that Excipio is committed to empowering its clients. Can you share an example of a particularly challenging project you’ve worked on and how you overcame the challenges?

David Hutchison: One project that stands out was for a client who was facing significant operational challenges. They were working on a large-scale data center project, but their existing operations were inefficient, leading to cost overruns and delays. We were brought in to help streamline their operations and get the project back on track. The first step was to conduct a thorough assessment of their existing processes. We identified several areas where they could improve efficiency, such as optimizing their resource allocation and implementing automated management systems.

By making these changes, we were able to save them $75 million over five years and significantly reduce the time required to complete the project.

Jack Vonich: Saving $75 million over five years is an incredible result. What do you think were the key factors that contributed to that success?

David Hutchison: The key factors were our comprehensive approach and our ability to quickly identify inefficiencies. By looking at the big picture, we were able to see how different elements of the project were interconnected and where improvements could be made. Our use of advanced analytics and monitoring tools also played a significant role, as they allowed us to make data-driven decisions and optimize the project in real-time. Finally, our close collaboration with the client’s team ensured that everyone was on the same page and working towards the same goals.

Jack Vonich: Speaking of analytics, how important is data-driven decision-making in data center management?

David Hutchison: Data-driven decision-making is absolutely critical in data center management. The sheer volume of data generated by modern data centers can be overwhelming, but it also provides valuable insights into how the systems are functioning. By using advanced analytics, we can process this data and identify patterns and trends that might not be immediately apparent. This allows us to make more informed decisions and take proactive measures to optimize performance, reduce costs, and prevent issues before they arise.

Jack Vonich: It’s fascinating how data can be used to optimize operations. But with all this data, there’s also the issue of security. How does Excipio address the security challenges that come with managing such sensitive information?
